Madeleine Rees has been the Secretary-General of WILPF since 2010. She began her career as a discrimination lawyer, winning a landmark European Court ruling on transgender rights in 1996. She was one of the first to highlight the issue of human trafficking as Head of Office in Bosnia and Herzegovina and as gender expert for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, whom she later served in Geneva as Head of the Women’s Rights and Gender Unit. At WILPF, Rees works on the intersection of militarism, capitalism and neo-liberalism through the prism of gender.
