Emerging artificial intelligence (AI) technologies like ChatGPT have been met with both applause and consternation. Many herald AI as a powerful tool that will reduce labor costs and democratize knowledge — others are concerned with the risks and potential accountability gaps arising from this technology’s use. In this presentation, Tiernan will ask: if AI can make decisions and act autonomously, who, if anyone, should be criminally liable for harms caused by AI?
